Chinese Dinning Etiquette:
-
In China, round table is more popular than a square or rectangular one. This allows people to be seated comfortably facing each other. If you are dinning with a big group, the table usually has a glass lazy Susan center. The lazy Susan is a rotating surface in the center of the table that spins. This allows guests to reach all the dishes placed on a large, round table rather than having to pass lots of plates around.
-
If you are the guest, you shouldn’t start to drink or eat before the host does. This rule is also present in western countries.
-
Other than soup, all other dishes should be eaten with chopsticks. If it is something small, round, slippery and hard to pick up with chopsticks, feel free to use a spoon. It's better to use spoon than making a mess with chopsticks.
-
Do not use your chopsticks to point at someone at the table.
-
Do not dig around or pick through the dishes for specific ingredients you prefer—doing so is considered especially rude since you are sharing the dish with others.
-
Don't be surprised that fish sometimes is served whole. Fish head is considered edible.
-
Don't stick your chopsticks in your rice bowl. When taking a break, leave your chopsticks to the side of your plate or bowl.
-
Try all the dishes. Feel free to avoid eating the dishes you dislike but refrain from criticizing them. It is certainly bad manners to criticize the host's choice.
